Install and start tubIT-live

tubIT-live can be executed on a memory stick or on a virtual machine. Requirements are:

  • empty USB with a minimum of 8 GB storage
  • PC/Notebook with internet connection
  • administrator rights to execute programmes and to change the order of booting

Install tubIT-live on USB in the PC-Pool

If you were unable to download the tubIT-live image during provisioning the easiest way is to go to the PC Pool (EN-004) and create your tubIt-live USB there. During pool opening hours (monday to friday 8am to 6pm) simply come here and bring your empty USB with you.

Step 1: Connect your USb to one of the computers.
Step 2: Click on the tubIT-live icon on the sign-in screen.
Step 3:
Afterwards any computer can be booted and tubIT-live can be started from your USB.
Step 4: Prior to first usage the USB needs to be personalised. ("First usage ["Setup"]") Your tubIT user data is used to do that- simply follow the directions on the screen. Now tubIT-live is generated and the computer will automatically restart with your personalised tubIT-live-system.

Use tubIT-live as a virtual machine with VirtualBox

You will need the VirtualBox (inkl. Extension Pack) programme and a tubIT-live image file (file extension .img).

Download VirtualBox

Download VirtualBox Extension Pack (click on all supported platforms)

Download tubIT-Live

Step 1: Install VirtualBox on your computer. Confirm the installation of the individual components when prompted.

Step 2: Start the VirtualBox Extension Pack and follow the installation instructions.

Step 3: VirtualBox starts automatically. Choose import appliance ("Appliance importieren") from the submenu under File ("Datei").

Step 4: Choose the file tubIT-live-vm.ova and import it.

Step 5: Click an the start button with the green arrow.

Note: The virtual machine is being allocated 2 GB RAM by default. Should you wish to in- or decrease the allocated RAM, click the Change button in the menu System and set the new size of VirtualBox. 

Step 6: Prior to first usage the system needs to be personalised using your tubIT user data. ("First Usage ["Setup"]") Please follow the prompts on the screen. Afterwards your virtual machine will be generated and the personalised tubIT-live-system will restart automatically.




Alternative for „IT-Experts“

This alternative of creating the tubIT-live USB is only recommended for experienced users.

If by mistake, in the process of creating the USB, the wrong drive is chosen it could be irrevocably destroyed.

The TU cannot be held responsible for any damages on your personal computer caused by incorrect installation of tubIT-live.

Install tubIT-live on USB (Windows)

You will need an Imager such as win32diskimager and a tubIT-live image file (file extension .img). Please save both files on your computer, not on the memory stick! 

Download win32diskimager

Download tubIT-Live

Connect your memory stick to your computer and write down the allocated drive character.

!Attention! If during the process a drive character other than the memory stick is chosen the respective drive will be irrevocably overwritten and all data will be erased!

Step 1: Install win32diskimager on your computer.

Step 2: Start win32diskimager

Step 3: Choose the .img file in the Image File field.

Step 4: Under Device choose the drive character for the memory stick.

Step 5: Click on Write to start the process and confirm that the memory stick may be overwritten.

Step 6: Close win32diskimager once the process has been completed.

Step 7: Afterwards you can connect your memory stick to any computer to boot and start tubIT-live.

Step 8: Prior to first usage the USB needs to be personalised. ("First usage ["Setup"]") Your tubIT user data is used to do that- simply follow the directions on the screen. Now tubIT-live is generated and the computer will automatically restart with your personalised tubIT-live-system.

Install tubIT-live on USB (MacOS)

Download tubitlive-usb-efi.img. Please save both files on your computer, not on the memory stick!

In order to execute the following steps, you need to have administrative rights on the computer.

Step 1: Open up a terminal and go to the directory, where you have saved the downloaded file

Step 2: List the mounted devices with the following command:

> diskutil list

Step 3: Connect a USB and repeat the previous command

> diskutil list

If your USB has been recognized correctly, the list will have a new entry named "disk1", "disk2" or similar

You can view the details of the USB (e.g. "disk4") with the following command:

> diskutil info disk4

Step 4: If you are certain, that it is the right USB (e.g. "disk4"), execute the following command:

> diskutil unmountDisk disk4

In the next step the image will be copied onto the USB.

!Attention! If you mistakenly choose another disk here, all data will be irrevocably deleted and replaced.

Step 5: Write the image onto the USB with the following command:

> sudo dd if=tubIT-live-usb-efi.img of=/dev/rdisk4 bs=1m

You might be asked for an admin password.

Step 6: Afterwards you can connect your USB to any computer and boot from the USB. Keep pressing ALT while booting to start tubIT-live

Step 7: Prior to first usage the USB needs to be personalised. ("First usage ["Setup"]") Your tubIT user data is used to do that- simply follow the directions on the screen. Now tubIT-live is generated and the computer will automatically restart with your personalised tubIT-live-system.

Install tubIT-live on USB (Linux)

Download tubitlive-usb-efi.img. Please save both files on your computer, not on the memory stick!

To perform the following steps you need administrator rights for the computer you are using.

Step 1: Connect your memory stick to your computer.

Step 2: Open up a terminal and check the device name of the memory stick with the following command (e.g. Disk:  /dev/sdb):

> sudo fdisk -l

!Attention! If during the process a device name other than the memory stick is chosen the respective drive will be irrevocably overwritten and all data will be erased!

Step 3: Once you have made sure of the correct device name, please change to the directory where the image file has been saved.

Step 4: Overwrite the memory stick with the following command:

> sudo dd if=[tubIT-live-usb-efi.img] of=[device-name] bs=1M

Substitute the expression in brackets with the correct file and device name.

Step 5: Afterwards you can connect your memory stick to any computer to boot and start tubIT-live.

Step 6: Prior to first usage the USB needs to be personalised. ("First usage ["Setup"]") Your tubIT user data is used to do that- simply follow the directions on the screen. Now tubIT-live is generated and the computer will automatically restart with your personalised tubIT-live-system.

First Usage

Prior to first usage the USB needs to be personalised. Your tubIT user data is used to do that. Afterwards your personalised tubIT-live-system will be generated automatically.

Step 1: Start tubIT-live "Setup".
Step 2: Follow the directions on the screen and initiate the process.
Step 3: Type in your first and your last name.
Step 4: Type in your tubIT user name and your tubIT password.

After the setup the computer will automatically restart with the personalised tubIT-live-system.

Start tubIT-live from USB

Depending on your system the order of booting needs to be changed so that next time the computer will start from USB. (directions differ for varied BIOS/EFI versions, language, etc... a description for your version can be found on the internet)

Step 1: Connect USB-Stick to the computer
Step 2: Start computer in BIOS/EFI mode (e.g. press F12 or DEL-button during booting)
Step 3: Change booting order in BIOS/EFI -menu
Step 4: Save and restart
